Overview

BudgPay ("we", "us", "BudgPay") is a shared budgeting app that helps you and your group track budgets, split expenses, record contributions, and settle up — and hand off payments to your own UPI app when you choose to pay. This policy explains what information the app collects, why, and how it's handled. By creating an account, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here.

Information we collect

We collect the following categories of information, all tied to your use of the app:

Account details. How you sign in — your phone number (verified via OTP), or your Google or Apple account (name, email, and profile photo, if shared by that provider) — and, if you choose to add them, your full name, email address, and UPI ID. Google/Apple sign-ins are still asked for a phone number afterwards, since it's required for the rest of the app to work.

Budget & financial data. The budgets, expenses, contributions, categories, notes, and settlement records you and your group members create inside the app. Amounts are stored in whole rupees.

Personal Ledger contacts. Personal Ledger lets you track money you've given to or received from someone. When you add an entry, you pick a person from your phone's contact list — we only ever see the name and phone number of the specific contact you select, never your full address book, and it's stored so your ledger stays in sync across your devices.

Camera & photos. When you scan a UPI QR code or attach a receipt photo to an expense, that image is processed to read payment details or stored against the expense record. We don't access your photo library beyond an image you explicitly capture or attach.

Push notification token. A device token issued by Firebase Cloud Messaging, used to deliver budget, expense, and invite notifications to your device.

Bill & EMI reminders. Reminders you create are scheduled as local notifications directly on your device — the reminder data (name, amount, due date) is stored on our servers so it's available across your devices, but the notification itself is never sent through us or any third party.

Usage & diagnostic data. App events (like "budget created" or "payment made") and crash/error reports, collected automatically via Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to help us understand usage patterns and fix bugs.

Advertising data. If ads are shown in the app, Google AdMob may collect device and advertising identifiers to serve and measure ads, as described in Google's own privacy policy.

What we don't do

BudgPay never asks for or stores your bank account number, card details, UPI PIN, or net-banking credentials. Payments are handed off directly to whichever UPI app you choose (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, etc.) — that app, your bank, and NPCI's UPI network handle the actual transfer. BudgPay only records the amount and payee you told it you paid. We also never read, upload, or store your address book as a whole — Personal Ledger only ever touches the one contact you deliberately pick.

How we use your information

To operate the app — authenticate you, sync budgets and expenses across your group's members, calculate splits and settlements, and deliver notifications.

To improve the app — understand which features are used, diagnose crashes, and prioritize fixes.

To communicate with you — send budget/expense/invite notifications and respond to support requests.

For advertising — show and measure in-app ads, where applicable.

Who we share it with

We don't sell your personal information. Budget, expense, and contribution data is visible only to the members of the same budget group. We share limited data with the following service providers, solely to operate the app:

Firebase (Google) — Analytics, Crashlytics, Cloud Messaging, and Authentication, for app diagnostics, push notifications, and (if you choose) signing in with Google or Apple.

Google AdMob — to serve and measure in-app ads, where shown.

Apple — if you sign in with Apple, Apple authenticates you on our behalf and may share your name and email (or a private relay email, at your choice) with us.

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of BudgPay, our users, or the public.

Data retention

We keep your account and budget data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal profile data; budget and expense records shared with other members of a group may be retained within that group's history, since deleting them would affect other members' own expense records.

Your rights & choices

Access & correction — you can view and edit your profile, budgets, and expenses directly in the app at any time.

Notifications — push notification preferences can be turned off from Settings.

Account deletion — contact us using the details below to request deletion of your account and personal data.

Data security

We use industry-standard measures — including encrypted network connections and hashed one-time passwords — to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your data using commercially reasonable safeguards.

Children's privacy

BudgPay is not directed at children under 18. We don't knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we'll remove it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app changes. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above, and, where appropriate, an in-app notice.
